Copper carbonate hydroxide, known widely by the much more fetching name of malachite, is an opaque copper compound known for its distinctive light and dark green swirls. Found in Russia, Romania, Zambia, and the Middle East, malachite is likely one of the earliest ores from which copper was derived.

Used by the ancient Greeks to create amulets for protecting children and during the Middle Ages to fashion amulets which defended against black magic, malachite is a potent magical stone for guiding one’s spiritual journey and protecting from danger. Among various other properties, malachite is able to extend one’s psychic ability to detect danger in their environment, as well as enhancing will forces. Malachite is also said to warn the wearer of impeding danger by breaking, and it can be used in all sorts of protection magic, especially while traveling!

Said to increase vitality, stimulate tissue repair, and aid in recovery from disease, malachite is also used to boost self-confidence and instill emotional clarity. A malachite amulet engraved with a rayed sun is said to increase the powers of the magus using it, and malachite may also be used in prosperity magic and to ward against nightmares. Malachite can be attached to a child’s bed or cradle to ward off illness and other dangers, or hung in a nursery window to prevent negative energies from entering the room.

Malachite is a soft stone and susceptible to damage if handled roughly, so take special care while cleaning it. Make sure to protect it from scratches and extremes of temperature, especially sudden temperature changes. Use Earth cleansing to purify and recharge malachite, and do it often! This stone has a tendency to absorb negativity, especially when used in healing work. It will fade and begin to crack if not completely cleansed often. You can also cleanse and recharge malachite by laying it on a clear quartz cluster in the sun. Do not use salt as it will mar the surface of the stone, and be sure to avoid breathing the dust of raw malachite.

* I could not find conclusive answers on whether malachite has projective or receptive energy, but my research suggests it’s projective.

Owing its brilliant green hue to the presence of chromium and vanadium, emerald crystals are rarely flawless, and are thus often oiled to mask imperfections and cut in such a way to optimize their look. It is told that this symbol of hope will bring joy and enhance emotions, memory, faith, and clairvoyance. It is held to benefit one’s intuition, promoting communication though truthfulness.

Emerald is believed to aid eyesight, heart, lungs, thymus, pancreas, and the lymphatic system. It is also considered to ease transitions in menopause. Shields social workers and counselors from being worn down, and helps healing after the breakup of a relationship. This stone is useful in past life recall, protects from domestic violence, banishes nightmares, and protects from psychic attack. Also known as sodium chloride and halite, salt is invaluable to witches. It is crucial for life and can be deadly in excess, with the human body requiring a very precise amount of sodium to function properly and our gustatory system detecting salt as one of the five basic tastes. Used in preservation and even as currency, any witch worth her salt will know the value of this mineral well.

Energy ~ n/a

Element ~ Earth (regular halite), Fire (black halite)

Planet ~ Saturn & The Moon

Zodiac Sign ~ Cancer or Pisces

Deities ~ Huixtocihuatl

Chakra ~ Root (white halite), Crown (blue halite), Heart (pink halite)

Though typically considered mundane, halite’s cube-shaped crystals have healing and spiritual properties of their own. Salt crystals alleviate issues with judgment and self-confidence, dispelling worries from the user’s mind. Sodium chloride can also balance the aura and remove energy blockages, as well as bringing peace to one’s emotional state (particularly helpful with mood swings).

Used in purification rituals and as an offering to deities for centuries, most altars today are kept with a dish of salt as one of the ritual items. A pinch of salt is often added to the four corners of a room before beginning a ceremony in order to stave off outside influence, and salt can also be added to water to consecrate it. This combines the elements of Earth and Water, making it very useful for cleansing and purifying ceremonies, often alongside fumigation to combine the elements of Fire and Air.

According to a Shinto tradition in Japan, small piles of salt called morijio are placed near doorways to ward off evil, and it is said that standing inside of a circle of salt can protect one against malicious powers.
